Charles Coleman was recognized during Monday’s council meeting. City Council President Shannon Hardin called Coleman a superhero in front of the full council.

“When we talk all the time about we have 9,000 city employees that don’t get enough love and appreciation for who they are, Mr. Coleman, this is who our employees are. They are superheroes in big and small ways,” Hardin said.

Coleman said he did not see himself as a hero. He said he simply responded to what was in front of him.

“What happened that day wasn’t something I planned for or expected. I simply acted in the moment in the best way I knew how. I believe most people would have done the same thing if they were in my position,” Coleman said. “Saving that young woman’s life is something I’ll carry with me forever. But this recognition reminds me that we’re all connected, and that even the small decisions and critical moments can make a lasting difference.”

Coleman said he hopes the recognition encourages others to step up when they see someone who needs help.
