Browns Acquire Tytus Howard From Texans for Fifth-Round Pick; Sign Lineman to $63M Extension

The Cleveland Browns are wasting no time overhauling their offensive line. The Browns agreed to acquire veteran offensive lineman Tytus Howard from the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round draft pick, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday. As part of the deal, Howard signed a three-year, $63 million extension with Cleveland, keeping him under contract through 2029. The trade cannot be finalized until the new NFL league year opens on March 11.

Why Cleveland Needed This Move

The Browns entered this offseason with a major problem up front. Only one Week 1 offensive line starter — tackle Dawand Jones, who is still recovering from a serious leg injury, is under contract for 2026. Cleveland ranked 20th in pass block win rate and 24th in run block win rate during the 2025 season. GM Andrew Berry had to act fast, and Howard is his first move.

Howard, who turns 30 in May, has started 93 career games for the Texans since they drafted him in the first round in 2019. He played right tackle, left guard, and right guard last season, giving the Browns flexibility in how they use him. In 2025, he allowed just a 4.8 percent pressure rate, one of the better marks among offensive linemen in the league, according to Next Gen Stats.

The Browns remain one of the most-followed NFL teams in Central Ohio, with a large sports fan base across the Columbus metro area.

What Howard Brings

Howard is a strong pass blocker who can play multiple positions along the line. His run blocking has been inconsistent at times, but his versatility and pass protection make him a valuable addition. The extension includes $45 million in new guaranteed money.

Howard Reacts

“I wasn’t surprised,” he told KPRC2. “They’re trying to get younger and pay some guys. I ain’t mad. I kind of knew it was going to happen. I just appreciate the support over the last seven years. I’ll always be a Texan forever. I’m excited to go to Cleveland and turn the city up and help change the program and win some games.”

What Comes Next

With Howard expected to anchor one side of the line, the Browns may shift their 2026 NFL Draft focus toward other positions. Cleveland holds the No. 6 overall pick and is rebuilding under first-year head coach Todd Monken. More moves are expected before March 11.
