Columbus Police Use-of-Force Video from Linden Sent to Inspector General; Union Calls Technique an Approved Leg Sweep

COLUMBUS: The Columbus Division of Police has forwarded a viral video showing a use-of-force incident to the Columbus Department of the Inspector General after the footage spread widely on social media, according to police.

The incident happened Tuesday night along Cleveland Avenue in the Linden neighborhood on Columbus’s Northeast Side.

The Video Shows

Officers were responding to a report of someone trying to kick down a door and threatening to open fire, according to police. Video of the encounter shows a woman being taken to the ground. Two people were detained. Police have not released their identities and no charges have been confirmed as of publication.

Police said they forwarded the video to the inspector general’s office after the department became aware of it circulating online. It is not yet confirmed whether the inspector general has opened a formal investigation or is conducting a preliminary review.

The Police Union Said

Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge President Brian Steel addressed the incident Thursday. He described the encounter as high risk and said the technique used appears to be a leg sweep, which he called an approved tactic and the lowest level on the department’s use-of-force scale.

“These types of encounters are inherently high-risk and require officers to act quickly to ensure the safety of the public, the officers involved, and the individuals being detained,” Steel said.

The union’s characterization is its own position and does not represent an official finding by police leadership or the inspector general.

This investigation adds to a busy month for local oversight, following records released regarding the 1 Dead After Shooting Outside North Columbus Hotel.

Body Camera Footage Still Pending

Reporters has requested body-worn camera and dash camera footage from the Columbus Division of Police. No timeline for release has been provided. The exact location along Cleveland Avenue, what led up to the physical encounter, and whether any charges will be filed all remain unconfirmed.

The inspector general’s office provides independent oversight of city agencies including police and reviews allegations of misconduct or improper use of force. No findings have been released. The review is ongoing.

This is a developing story. ColumbusFrontline.com will update as body camera footage and inspector general findings are released.
