Leaders Hope New Columbus-to-Los Angeles Flight Will Boost Economic Growth

COLUMBUS, Ohio A new nonstop flight connecting Columbus and Los Angeles has officially launched, and local leaders say the route could play a key role in driving economic growth across Central Ohio.

United Airlines began daily nonstop service between John Glenn Columbus International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport on March 29, offering a direct link between the Midwest and the West Coast.

The flight departs Columbus at 7:25 a.m., with a return departure from Los Angeles at 11 a.m., creating a same-day travel option for both business and leisure passengers.

A Strategic Route for Growth

Local airport officials say the new route fills a long-standing gap.

“As our largest underserved destination, additional service to Los Angeles was a top priority as business ties between the two areas continue to grow,” said Betsy Taylor, manager of passenger airline business development at the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.

Officials estimate roughly 400 passengers travel between Columbus and the Los Angeles region each day — many of whom previously relied on connecting flights.

From Convenience to Competitiveness

While the new route improves travel times, economic development leaders say its broader impact could be more significant.

One Columbus has identified expanded air service as a key factor in attracting business investment and talent to the region.

Columbus has seen rapid growth in recent years, fueled by major investments from companies including Intel, Honda, and Google, alongside a growing tech and startup ecosystem.

Direct access to Los Angeles a global center for entertainment, aerospace, trade, and venture capital, provides new opportunities for partnerships that were previously less accessible due to travel constraints.

Part of a Broader Expansion

The Los Angeles route is one of nine new nonstop destinations announced from Columbus in 2026, reflecting continued expansion at John Glenn International Airport.

The airport now offers more than 50 nonstop destinations, strengthening its position as a growing regional hub.

United Airlines has also announced plans to expand service to San Francisco, increasing seasonal flights from Columbus to twice daily starting in May.

Economic Outlook Aligns With Growth

The new route comes as Central Ohio continues to post steady economic gains.

A 2026 business outlook survey by JPMorgan Chase found that 41% of midsize Ohio business leaders plan to expand into new domestic markets this year.

Meanwhile, regional economist Bill Lafayette of Regionomics projects job growth of about 0.7% in 2026, roughly 8,000 net new jobs with Columbus expected to outperform national trends.

What It Means for Travelers

For travelers, the new route offers faster and more flexible options.

Passengers can now leave Columbus in the morning and arrive in Los Angeles in time for afternoon meetings or international connections, while return flights allow for a full day on the West Coast.

For a region increasingly competing on a national and global stage, local leaders say expanded air service is more than a convenience, it’s infrastructure for growth.
