Franklinton Chase Ends With Crash Into Columbus Police Cruiser

A Columbus police officer went to the hospital early Wednesday after a fleeing driver crashed into the officer’s cruiser in Franklinton, according to Columbus police. The crash happened at West Broad Street and North Central Avenue.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser was following a light-colored sedan in Franklinton when Columbus police got a call to help track the vehicle, Columbus police said. A high-speed chase followed, and the sedan hit the police cruiser head-on, according to NBC4. Both vehicles had heavy front-end damage.

Police said the officer is in stable condition and expected to survive. The Highway Patrol said the hospital visit was a precaution. Two people were in the sedan, and neither needed hospital treatment, the patrol said.

Troopers arrested both people at the scene, according to NBC4. A Highway Patrol sergeant said the male driver faces several charges related to felony fleeing, lane violations, marijuana and driving without a license. Police have not released the names of the officer or the two suspects.

Sources differ on the exact time. Columbus police put the chase at 1:38 a.m. WSYX reported the crash at about 1:30 a.m., and the Highway Patrol said just before 1:20 a.m.
