Two Jump From Second Floor in Near East Side Columbus Fire

Two people were critically injured Sunday, Sept. 27, after jumping from a second-floor window to escape a duplex fire on East Fulton Street in Columbus’ Near East Side, also known as Old Towne East. The Columbus Division of Fire was called to the 1000 block of East Fulton Street around 11:30 a.m., Battalion Chief Brian Barnhart said.

Where it happened: The fire broke out at a three-story, two-family home at 1068-1070 E. Fulton St., Fire Division spokesman Lt. Nick Davis said.

Who was hurt: Crews arrived to find two victims with burns who had jumped from the second floor. Firefighters rescued them, and medics took both to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in critical condition, Davis said. Their names and current conditions have not been released.

Did everyone get out: Yes. About five other residents were inside when the fire started. All five escaped safely and did not need hospitalization, Davis said. Neighbors called 911 to report the fire.

How big was the response: Dispatchers first reported people trapped on the second floor and a back porch, Barnhart said. Extra fire companies and medics were sent. NBC4 Columbus reported about 25 vehicles and 50 crew members responded.

What caused it: Columbus Fire said a smoldering cigarette bin caused the fire. Officials urged residents to be careful when disposing of smoking materials.

Columbus Frontline will update this story when officials release more information.
